Last fall, Blue Horizon Texas had its first Filing Fee Fundraising campaign to help cover candidates filing fees for the 2024 election cycle. This successful effort made it possible for 25 candidates to file for office throughout rural Texas. These candidates may not have been able to run otherwise.

This episode is filled with glimmers of hope and excitement. You are also able to hear the synergy between our co-founders, Claire Barnett and Stephanie Phillips. It is an understatement to say these two are well-matched for Blue Horizon Texas’ mission of giving rural progressive candidates the support needed as they step out as local heroes on an uneven political field.

In this podcast, we wanted to let you into the behind the scenes process of helping candidates file. You hear Claire Barnett and Stephanie Phillips in our morning meeting and as they talk throughout the day. As past candidates, they both know how confusing filling can be depending on the office, the term, special election, district or precinct.  They also understand the financial burden of running for office. They discuss which candidates need support and what strategies to use to meet those needs with the deadline at the end of this workday. There are so many things to coordinate in order not to jeopardize potential candidates' filing process.

In this episode you'll hear the story of how Claire and Stephanie met on I-35 to hand off the Blue Horizon checkbook, so Stephanie could write checks in the Texas Democratic Party Office as candidates filed their applications for a place on the ballot.
